Yes, only three simple ingredients and you're five minutes away from milkshake heaven.
Nutella being the smooth and velvety chocolate-hazelnut spread that it is, adds a rich and indulgent flavour to the shake. We use plain vanilla ice cream to allow the Nutella flavours to shine.

Key ingredients and substitutions
**Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full list of ingredients.
Nutella
Naturally, it goes by the name Nutella milkshake because it's made with Nutella.
However, we've experimented with other chocolate hazelnut spreads that are a bit more budget-friendly and they yield the same tasty result.
So, if you're looking to save some cash, consider exploring alternatives.
Ice cream
We recommend using plain vanilla ice cream to allow the Nutella flavours to shine.
If you are a complete chocoholic, you can use chocolate ice cream instead.
Toffee, caramel or hazelnut ice cream are also good options. This is a very customisable shake, so use the ice cream you love the best.
You can swap the ice cream for dairy-free ice cream or a vegan option.
Milk
We typically use whole milk or full-fat milk.
However, if you're feeling extra indulgent and ready to throw caution to the wind, you can substitute some, or all of the milk, with double cream (heavy cream in the US).
If the double cream available where you live is incredibly thick (they vary from country to country), you can go for single cream or whipping cream instead.
But a word of caution, a milkshake this rich might not be everyone's cup of tea, so it's best to stick to milk if you're in that camp!
For a dairy-free milkshake, you can use almond milk, soy milk or oat milk.
Variations
For a peanut butter Nutella milkshake, add a large tablespoon of peanut butter to the mix.
Top tip: If you end up with a little Nutella left in the jar after making these milkshakes, add some milk to the jar, close the lid tightly and shake. Voila! A great way to make Nutella-flavoured chocolate milk, and no wastage.
How to make a Nutella milkshake
- It really can't be easier. Add all three ingredients to a food processor, or blender. For easier blending, it helps to add the milk to the blender first, followed by the other two ingredients in no particular order.
- Whiz until smooth and creamy! It should take about 20-30 seconds.
If you want a thinner milkshake, add a small touch of milk and blend again until you achieve your perfect consistency.
Similarly, add less milk from the start for a thicker milkshake.
- Pour into tall milkshake glasses and serve.
Top tips
- Take the ice cream out of the freezer 10 minutes before starting to make it easier to blend in with the Nutella, resulting in a creamy milkshake.
- After whizzing for some time, stir it around with a spoon to ensure there are no solid pieces of ice cream left. Whizz again.
- Some people like to add a few ice cubes to the blending process as it delivers more of a froth.
How to make this shake without a blender
This will take a little more elbow grease, but it works.
- Let the ice cream sit outside the freezer for a while to soften up.
- Gently warm the Nutella in the microwave for a short time until it becomes slightly more liquid.
- Add all three ingredients into a sealable container with a lid, or a smoothie shaker.
- Shake vigorously until everything has been blended and the milkshake looks frothy and light.
Topping suggestions
- Whipped cream.
- Chocolate cream.
- Chocolate sauce.
- Chocolate sprinkles.
- Chocolate shavings.
- Long pieces of chocolate broken off from a slab, for instance, a row of three or four squares, stuck into some whipped cream to hold it in place.
- Wafer cigars.
- Chocolate fingers.
- Warm some Nutella in the microwave and coat the inside of the glass with it before pouring in the milkshake. The same can be done with chocolate sauce.
- You can also serve it in a mason jar, or in an empty jar of Nutella for a bit of a novelty factor.
Storage suggestions
Ideally, this milkshake should be enjoyed straight away. You can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days, but be aware that it will lose its frothiness. Whizz in the food processor again to give it some life back.
