An epicurean adventure to: South Asia
The mighty Milo Dinosaur – a chilled, malted chocolate drink with a dino-sized personality. It's simply T-Rex-quisite!
Served cold with sweetened condensed milk, ice and a colossal mound of undissolved Milo on top.
I sense your scepticism about the dry Milo mound – impractical, even messy, right? But hold on, it's not as chaotic as you'd expect.
In fact, my inner neat freak was pleasantly surprised to discover that the dry Milo is, believe it or not, the absolute highlight of the drink. Turns out, eating dry Milo with a spoon or straw is simply...dino-mite! (Har har..)
Originating in Australia, Milo has actually found its Jurassic fame in Malaysia and Singapore, where these Milo Dinosaurs reign supreme.
Milo boasts a whopping 90% market share in Malaysia, making Malaysians the world's biggest consumers of this malty chocolate drink!
In South Asia, Milo dinosaurs can be found freely roaming in cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, street stalls and homes alike. It's even given rise to delightfully named spin-offs like:
- The Milo Godzilla - A basic dinosaur featuring an added scoop of ice cream.
- The Majestic Milo King Kong - Adorned with a DOUBLE scoop of ice cream AND whipped cream AND chocolate sauce AND sprinkles. Phoar!
The bottom line, it's an irresistibly delicious drink. I implore you to try it, undissolved Milo mountain on top is compulsory.

Key Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
**Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full list of ingredients.
Milo
Milo is readily available in Australia, New Zealand, South Asia, South America and South Africa.
If you're outside these regions, fear not! You can still find it in certain stores. In the UK, Sainsbury's carries it and Walmart stocks it in the US.
We incorporate a generous 4 tablespoons of Milo into 200ml of milk. Keep in mind that the ice will dilute the drink, so we begin with a concentrated Milo mix.
You will also need a few extra spoonfuls of Milo to add on top of your Dinosaur.
In a pinch, Horlicks or Ovaltine can both be used in place of Milo.
Condensed milk
We recommend starting with 2-3 tablespoons of condensed milk per 200ml of whole milk but feel free to adjust to your taste preferences.
Keep in mind that the drink may become less sweet as it gets diluted with the addition of ice.
Optional: How to make a Milo-rimmed glass
This is purely for decoration, so if you have the time, it makes a lovely, fun addition to your Milo Dinosaur experience.
We've found that once you add the dry Milo on top of the ice, it blends into the rim in such a way that it makes the whole top part of the glass look a bit like a prehistoric scene.
- Pour a couple of tablespoons of condensed milk onto a small plate. Roll the outside rim of the glass in the condensed milk. You can make this line as thin or wide as you wish.
- Add a couple of tablespoons of Milo to another small plate. Now, roll the glass in the Milo powder so that it sticks to the condensed milk, forming a solid line around the glass.
How to make a Milo Dinosaur: Step-by-step
- Warm half the milk to boiling point in the microwave or a small saucepan on the stovetop.
(We warm the milk so that the Milo can fully dissolve into it)
- Add the Milo to the warm milk and stir until fully dissolved.
- Add the remaining cold milk to the Milo and mix again.
- Next, add your desired amount of condensed milk and give it a good mix to dissolve it into the Milo.
- Fill the glass to the top with ice cubes. You can use either whole or crushed ice.
- Pour in the Milo mixture and scoop a generous heap of Milo powder on top.
- Serve with a straw and a teaspoon to enjoy the dry Milo on top.
Variations
Milo Godzilla: Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream
Milo King Kong: Add two scoops of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate or strawberry sauce and sprinkles.
Other variations include:
- Replacing some of the milk with evaporated milk.
- Add coffee creamer.
- Add 1-2 teaspoons of coffee. It's called a Nestlo.
- Add all the ingredients, including the ice, to a blender and blend into a slushy.
- Add ice cream and blend in a food processor for a Milo shake.
We found these adorable mini dinosaurs on Amazon. They would be a delightful addition on top of the Milo mountain, especially for Dino-themed kids' parties.
Storage
A Milo Dinosaur is best enjoyed fresh if you have already added the ice. However, any leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 2 days.
To make the drink in advance, blend the Milo powder and condensed milk into the milk and set it aside in the fridge until needed. Once you're ready, simply add ice to a glass, pour in the Milo mixture, and top with dry Milo.
